Unit 3 / Session 2

Advertising

Once a business has identified the vacancies that need to be filled, and prepared a job description and person specification, they can move on to advertise the position. Remember that a business may choose to use one (or more) of the internal and external recruitment methods that we looked at in Session 1 of this Unit when advertising a position.

The business will use key information from the job description and person specification when writing the advert – the information that they think will be of most interest to potential candidates and provide them with enough detail about the job to encourage them to submit an application.

Click the numbered icons below to reveal some typical information included in a job advert.

  1. The job title
  2. The main duties and responsibilities
  3. Salary or rate of pay
  4. Any additional benefits on offer (such as a company car)
  5. When the job will start
  6. How interested candidates can apply (for example, request an application form, send in a CV, send an email to a contact at head office, etc)
  7. The closing date for applications

Key point

A job advert is often the first communication a business will have with potential candidates. The business needs to make sure it’s adverts are interesting and detailed enough to make a good first impression and stand out alongside other adverts for similar jobs. The advert is the chance to really sell the business and the benefits of working there, so that as many candidates as possible are encouraged to apply for the job.

On the web

Visit a couple of different online job search websites (www.indeed.co.uk, www.reed.co.uk, etc) and evaluate some job adverts. Do the adverts include information that will be useful to potential candidates? Are the adverts interesting and engaging? Do you think they will encourage candidates to apply for the job? If not, why not?

Type your thoughts into the box below and perhaps also discuss them with others in your class and/or your class teacher.
